FAQ

What is therapy  and counseling?

Therapy and counseling are terms that can be used interchangeably.  is a safe and supportive place to explore your deepest thoughts and feelings. It’s a judgement-free space where you can share everything that has hurt you and everything that brings you joy. We’ll work together to help you find a new way to live that is both fulfilling and meaningful.

What is a therapist or counselor?

Licensed counselors and psychotherapists are highly trained professionals with a Master’s degree or higher in a variety of theories and techniques about why people think, feel, and behave the way they do and how to change those patterns when they are no longer helpful. Therapists and counselors are able to diagnose and treat mental illness, although they do not prescribe medication.

How will therapy help me?

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to counseling. We will first discuss your mental health needs and what you would like to get out of therapy, then work together using evidence-based methods to help you meet your goals. For some, all they need is a supportive environment where they are free to explore their thoughts and feelings. Others need help learning new ways to cope with the stress in their lives. Still others need help processing and healing from trauma in their childhoods that is still causing them pain.

How long does therapy take?

Some people complete therapy in a few months, some in a few years. People who only go to therapy for a few months tend to have one goal, such as how to deal with a specific behavior issue with their child, or only need support for a specific life event, such as pregnancy. When there are deeper and more long-term issues, such as healing from ongoing trauma you faced as a child, getting to a place where you no longer need therapy can take longer.

How often will I have sessions?

The most common frequency is once per week. Later on, you may want to decrease the frequency to every other week or once a month.

How do I know if I need therapy?

Sometimes people wonder if they really need help or if they are just imagining it. Whether you think you might have a mental illness or would just like emotional and mental health support, both are equally valid reasons to go to therapy.
